Today, at the National Business Aviation Association’s (NBAA’s) 2024 NBAA White Plains Regional Forum, the Barrington Irving Technical Training School (BITTS) announced its first set of graduates from its local program, all of whom are ready to take positions at area facilities for two leading Fixed Base Operators (FBOs).

As a child growing up in Kenya, Beryl Ogola would take apart dolls and household items just to put them back together again.

Now, six years after coming to the United States to attend Florida Memorial University, Ogola, 28, is advancing her love of mechanics as a student at the Barrington Irving Technical Trade School (BITTS) in Opa-locka.

When he was still a kid, Florida Memorial University graduate Barrington Irving met a Black man who was wearing a fancy watch, a sharp blazer and slacks. When Irving asked what his job was, the man said he was a pilot. The nice clothes were his uniform.
Irving immediately knew that he wanted to be a pilot when he grew up.

The program helps underserved communities receive training and employment opportunities for high-demand industries.

NBAA welcomed the announcement that the Barrington Irving Technical Training School is expanding its program again.

The expansion with the city of Mount Vernon in Westchester County, NY, will help bring more students into the aviation workforce. The school is led by Capt. Irving, a Guinness World Record-breaking pilot and NBAA American Spirit Award winner.

Mount Vernon is taking flight with a new initiative aimed at empowering its youth with skills in aviation.

"Since I was a kid, I've always seen different career paths, like being pilots or being astronauts, as dreams and aspirations…I didn't know how to bring myself to a point where I could actually be working on these projects," said Carla Figueroa, a member of the Mt. Vernon Youth Bureau.

Throughout February, NBAA has marked Black History Month by recognizing the significant aviation contributions of African Americans and emphasizing the importance of ensuring our industry is open and welcoming to people from all backgrounds. “This is the opportunity of a lifetime,” said support technician Jevon Jackson when he was offered an opportunity to enter aviation.

The Miami-based Barrington Irving Technical Training School has secured jobs in the fast-growing aviation sector for its graduating class.

The training school is led by Captain Barrington Irving, a Guinness World Record-breaking pilot who was the youngest person and first black pilot to fly solo around the world.

Miami Opa-Locka—A new aviation technical school in Miami designed to inspire young adults to pursue science and math-based aviation jobs is already expanding.

The Barrington Irving Technical Training School opened at the Miami Opa-Locka Executive Airport in 2023 to provide accessible, high-quality training for people in the community. It trained 15 young adults last year, all of which are now employed in business aviation in the Miami area, and it plans to increase that number to 50 in 2024.

When Captain Barrington Irving turned 23 years old, he became the youngest person and first Black pilot to fly solo around the world, Frost Science reports.

Today, Irving is looking to inspire and educate the youth to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). He is carrying out this calling in various ways, including through the Barrington Irving Technical Training School.

Captain Barrington Irving is well known within the aviation industry. At age 23, he became the youngest person to circumnavigate the globe in a Columbia 400 named “Inspiration.” The aptly named aircraft has served its name to the next ventures in Captain Barrington’s career: the launch of The Flying Classroom and Experience Aviation. This new venture is based out of Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport.
